Policy Updates

The policy formerly known as "Class Attendance" has been updated to "Course Attendance." The following policy applies to all students:

Course Attendance

Registered students have freely accepted personal responsibility for enrollment and class attendance. Students are expected to attend all class and laboratory sessions for the courses in which they are enrolled. Students who will be missing class due to participating in a university-sponsored event (e.g., athletics competition, music tour, theatre performance, debate tournament, academic conference, and related travel) are responsible for notifying their professors as far in advance as possible in the given semester. This process is explained in the notification procedure given to students participating in university-sponsored events. Students who miss class for any other reason are to follow the notification procedures as outlined in their course syllabi.

If a student misses a class for any reason, the student is responsible for acquiring missed course material, learning that content, and submitting assignments on time. If a student misses a class for participating in a university-sponsored event, the student is given the chance to make up, in full, any missed assessments (e.g., quiz, activity) used to determine the course grade, or complete an equitable alternative assessment of equal grade value, unless the student did not follow the university-wide procedure for communicating the planned absence or if such an alternative or make up is unreasonable or fundamentally changes the nature of the assessment. If a student misses a class for any other reason, the faculty member determines whether and how missed work may be made up. If a student’s absences exceed 20% of class meeting time, including university-sponsored events, the student may fail the course.

Non-attendance does not constitute withdrawal. To withdraw from a course, students must formally withdraw from that course. For the rest of a course’s attendance policy, consult the syllabus for that course. For any questions or clarifications, speak with the instructor of that course.
