Course Description
This foundational course examines the key fundamentals of coaching excellence within five critical domains: Perspective, Purpose, Principles, People, and Process. Students will develop their own athlete-centered Philosophy of Coaching, including creating their program, team, or department’s vision, mission, and core values. Students will gain an understanding of the most prevalent types of coaching, including transactional, performance, developmental, relational, and transformational. Essential coaching characteristics and skills such as fundraising, communication, and practice and program organization will be cultivated and enhanced. Coaches will be equipped to meet the essential needs of athletes and assistant coaches, and athletic administrators will examine their responsibility for developing and supporting their coaches. For athletes, these needs include having coaches who create an appealing and thriving three-dimensional culture that serves body, mind, and spirit, excels at developing their character, encourages servant-leadership, inspires academic achievement, and maximizes their competitive experience.
